Transmission Problem??

I recently bought a 1988 cherokee laredo 4x4 with an automatic 4.0 liter. It has 130,000 miles. It runs great, plenty of power, and shifts out real smoothly. Here is the problem—at times, the engine (rpms) will “surge” a little. Usually, it is after shifting, and getting up to about 40-50 mph. After coasting a while, it will do it as you begin light acceleration. But, it has done it while pulling a hill slowly. It will simply “surge” (rpms will spike), and then return to normal. A few times it has done it two or three times in a row, a “jump-jump-jump”. What is this? I had the transmission fluid changed along with the filter. Someone mentioned to me it could be a torque converter going bad, or even a tune-up problem, like an EGR valve or bad plugs.

Help!

Hi,

I'm not much of an auto-transmission expert, but the torque converter idea might be worth looking into. Also, you might check that the throttle body and it's sensors are clean.

ive had this same problem with my jeep cherokee 1988. I couldnt figure out what the f*** was wrong with it, i tried replacing the electric fuel pump because i figured that might be cutting out for a milisecond, after spend $150 i found out all it needed was simple fuel injection cleaner! i did not think a $4 solution would fix it, but i guess it turns out that my fuel injectioners were a bit dirty which caused the rpm needle to "surge" but as soon as i put the fuel injection cleaner it it fixed it for me. "fuel injeftion cleaner seemed like a gimmick to me but it turns out it does work" try the $4 problem before trying to do anything pricey, i kick my self for it. write back and tell me if this fix's your problem too
