Transmission/transfer case mount

I am a female and i'm just learning jeep mechanics...I need help here.

I was going up a hill and my Jeep popped out of 4WD and made a loud noise, it sounded like something broke but I was able to pop it back into gear and proceded up the hill with no problem. I took it to the Jeep dealership to have it checked out and here is what they wrote on the invoice:

"Upon inspection found that veh has 3" after market body lift. Putting a bind on shifter mechanism and found trans mount has collapsed putting even more strain on shifter. Recommend replacing trans mount and T-case fluid is dirty."

I was told the the body lift voided the warranty on the part and service. labor and part total was $337, most was labor of course.

Is what they said accurate?
Can a 3" body lift add strain to the shifter?

Welcome to the Z. I'm going to assume you have a TJ only because you mention a warranty, so yes, a body lift will put great strain on the transfer case shifter. The TJ's transfer case shifter is mounted to both the drivetrain and the tub, so if you lift the tub 3" above the drivetrain, the bellcrank between the two is put in a bind.

That's steep for simply replacing a transmission mount. It's about a $40 or $50 part and takes about 30min to install. Unless the TC service is included in that, but still. That's why mine never sees the stealership.

A trasfercase drop kit should fix the problem from happening in the future. As far as having the mount replaced get a second opinion,it does seem like alot of labor for a little work.

I agree with Bounty Hunter. Dropping the T case will make matter worse instead of fixing the problem

Thanks for the responses...we will never ever visit a stealership ever again!
