Vacuum/4wd Problem

I recently got a '91 jeep wrangler (5-spd/6cyl.) and found that the front axles will not lock in 4wd. The xfer case will switch to low gearing, but no front traction. I pulled the double-vacuum connection off the front axle and even as someone shifted back and forth between 2 and 4wd the suction did not change (only got suction from one side - did not alternate) Could this be the vacuum switch on the transfer case? Should I check other places before I change out that switch? Could it be a leak anywhere?
Your veteran input would be greatly appreciated by this beginner jeeper! Thank you!

Well, looks like I'll be attempting the x-case vacuum swich replacement this Thurs... (hey- at least its not too expensive :-D ) If that dosen't work, back to the drawing board and I'll be attempting a home made in-cab posi-lok! :-?

Check the vacuum lines before replacing that switch in the transfer case, the line w/o vacuum may have a hole/break somewhere. If it's intact, probably the switch.

The vacuum 4wd system is not that bad once you get used to maintaining it and troubleshooting it. You did right by feeling for vacuum in the two lines to the front axle.[addsig]
