having trouble maintaining full voltage when putting my alternator undre a load (i.e. headlights, brake lights). Its a '79 CJ7 with a new alternator that is good. It's been tested and did fine. Could it be the voltage regulator?? it's seperate from the alternator. I'm not too familiar with auto electric, so this is driving me nuts. any good ideas much appreciated! thanks all! :-D

I live in a small town and even we have an auto electric shop. I can go by and tell him what kind of problem I am haveing and he usualy comes out to the Jeep and hooks up his magic machine and says "this or this is bad you need a ?" If you look around I am sure you can get some one in you rarea to hook up and tell you the same. I never get a charge unless i tell him to fix it! I always let him fix it! This is the best advice I can muster for now. Good Luck tug[addsig]

You can try replacing the regulator I don't think the regulator is very expensive. Another thing to check is the ground. Make sure it's connected solidly. Clean up the battery connections, both on the battery and the clamps. The battery posts corrode over time, and the connection between the post and clamp becomes bad. This will prevent the battery from getting a full charge, and giving a full charge.
Pick up one fo those battery tools, with the wire brush for the post & clamp. If theres a lot of white powdery substance on or around the battery posts, you can clean it up with a mixture of baking soda and water. (this will neturalize the acids) Be carefull not to get any into the battery juice! Just around the posts only!
