water pump advice

Well it looks like my water pump is shot...been dripping a little coolant for the past couple days and my check engine light came on a couple times....just wondering if anyone has had any experience with certain brands and/or websites....I have seen a couple "high flow" that are supposed to give you some extra horsepower????don't know how that works but thats what they say.....any help would be appreciated

if you want horsepower... see if there is an electric water pump availible... but i doubt there is for any amc motor... you might just have to replace the gasket, but if you are taking it all off... you might as well replace the pump too... mine was 33 bucks... and while you'll have that off... toss on an electric fan, really easy mod

Usually when a water pump is going out there is a little leakage from a drainage hole on the bottom of the pump in a direct line with the pump shaft. This indicates a bad internal seal. Unless you have a very hot runnin li'l monster, a stock replacement pump from any well known car parts place will do. If your gasket were the pump contacts the engine you have to pull the pump anyway so replace the pump at the same time. Very inexpensive. If the mods are an advantage for you and you see them as a good value, see the previous reply. Of course, don't forget to flush your cooling system at recommended intervals and put in the correct amount of coolant. Too much coolant causes problems, also.
about your check engine light, hmm, may not be related. I don't believe that overheating will make your check engine light come.

thats the thing...its not overheating at all....running just fine....only problem I can see is the little trickle of coolant coming off the water pump.....I hope that is what it is, b/c I don't have the funds for another high dollar fix after my clutch a couple weeks ago....takes all my mod money away......also I can't seem to find one specifically for my engine, just this one http://www.acmejeepparts.com/cgi-bi...2&UREQC=3&UREQD=4&FNM=00&UID=2004030723593283 will this work...its more than 33 bucks...snitty, where did you get yours??

mine was from autozone... but... every autozone has different prices based on location

yeah I was thinking about trying some local shops but they almost never have what I am looking for...I can order it for you, be here in five days

Tugger?

maybe you could go to autozone.com. you can order on line. Mine would be $35. Don't worry about a few days. You're water pump is definitly shot with that little leak showing. They rarely just fall apart and strand you but don't wait too long. Don't forget to top off the radiator until you get that leak stopped.

what advantages are there for an electric fan?? does this free up any kind of horsepower??

some say it frees up to 17 horsepower... not sure about that... but it could be true, that clutch fan takes a lot of power... the electric fan can also be turned off to allow the jeep to warm up faster in the winter... then... its a good clean mod... it gives you some more space to work under the hood

Whatever you do, don't put an Autozone or Advance remanufactured unit on there. I found through the years that it really isn't worth the savings to use the reman. They are prone to fail and the quality is poor. I'm not talking about just water pumps either. I recently went through 3 master cylinders before buying a new one that solved my problems. More recently than that I bought two A/C compressors at over $300 a pop before I finally bought a brand new one.
Get a new water pump, electric fan and new belt and you will be good to go.

ok well I got the water pump in the other day and it hasn't been weeping anymore so looks like that problem is solved...but my check engine light still comes on...and kinda feels like my acceleratoin and power isn't all there....exhaust kinda sounds a little different also I think....I heard autozone does free engine diagnosis, has anyone done this?? if it is the exhuast, I was planning on putting headers hi flow cat and a catback on anyways, anyone got any ideas of what else it could be??

if your light is on... autozone will check it and tell you what code is in the computer.. then from there you can better pinpoint a problem... a code is usually thrown because of a sensor, or something a sensor detects
