My 79 Cy 258ci is gettin really tired, dont have the funds or time to get into a 4.0 or V-8 swap so I was thinking of finding a old 258 and rebuilding it Clifford Performance offers a 220 HP rebuild kit for around $700 bucks....has anyone used this rebuild kit or know anyone who has just looking for some feedback on it. Also what year engines can I use in a 79 without having to make any changes, I hear I can use a 258 only up till 1980 after that something changed on the rear of the block....true or false????

Thanks

Are you saying the cost is too high for a CHevy V-8 or an AMC V-8? I would think an AMC V-8 block engine would not be much more than a 258. I've had both and the V-8 did just as well on fuel mileage. AMC changed some things on '81 and newer 258's. 1981 started the plastic valve cover and other weight saving changes. I don't think any changes were made to make this engine not line up with your transmission. But the newer the motor the more vacuum lines and possible computer controls you will have to contend with.[addsig]
