hey guys, I have a '96 grand cherokee with 6 and automatic transmission. How do I tell what Transmission is in it. it is leaking pretty bad and needs to come out for at least an overhaul if not replacement. It has 327,000 mi on it but is in beautiful shape except for the leak.

Should be an AW4, same as the XJ. There is a metal ID tag on the passenger side of the transmission that'll give you more information. Should say 'Aisin Warner' and maybe '42RE' or something similar.

The AW4 was only in the the grand cherokees in 93 according the the transmission manual I have. The 42RE transmission was used throughout the following years with the inline 6 motors. So unless your transmission has been replaced prevoiusly you should have the 42RE but as bounty hunter suggested you can look at the Id tag on the transmission to be sure. cycle your key on off on off on and watch your overdrive off indicator ligbt it should blink code 55 indicating that the Transmission is electronically controled.
