Window motor?

My driver side window (electric) will not go all the way down (it stops about an inch from being fully open). I hear clicking like teeth are skipping. The dealer said it could be one of three parts; the cable (which is like a bike chain), the Regulator, and motor.
Does anyone have any experience with this? And can some one point me to an online manual, because the book I bought doesnt describe the replacment procedure at all.

Thanks

I´m guessing you have an early XJ. The window actuator/regulator cable looks kinda like a rifle bore cleaning brush, but longer. Wear and tear, corrosion and what not take there toll. I´ve been lucky so far, I´ve found a couple of window regulators, that where fairly new (replaced on older Cherokees) at the junk yard.
I´ve not come across replacement or service in any manual yet. I imagine the shop manual probably has a section on this.
If the gear teeth arn´t messed up, a cable change might not be to hard. I just had my regulator out of my 88 last week (broken wire). removal and reinstallation weren´t that ruff. Drill out the rivets and replace with screws. Kind of a Chinese puzzle to get the motor and cable assembly out, without bending anything, but it can be done with a little patience.
Putting a small hose clamp on the cable housing, so the window doesn´t go all the way down and stick there, is a temporary fix, that will help keep the inside of the Jeep dry, until you find a good used or new assembly.
While your at it, check the widow runners, when they wear through, there are metal parts, that can catch the window and cause hard opening and closing. When the window jams or catches, it overworks the motor and can cause problems fast. I havn´t had much luck lubricationg the window runners, didn´t seem to help, actually seemed to make them stiffer.
At least once a year I lubricate the window regulator cables, havn´t had one fail yet, when it was lubricated. I use motorcycle chain oil.[addsig]

I'm sorry, yes I have a 92 Cherokee Sport. I really wish i could find a picture of what the assembly looked like before I get in there with a drill etc... i have no idea how everything is connected?

All of my advice might have been for not. They changed the regulator system in the early ninties. I havn´t seen the newer type fail yet.
Before I pull anything like that out. I steal my wifes makeup mirror, use with a falshlight and take a long slow look see. There are various types of electrical connectors, with various lock assemblies. Besides the routing of the door lock rods and other cables and such running through the door. I make sketches and put all the peices in some sort of container. Taking the clear plastic door liner off, is usually a pain, it´s often easier to cut out an access (three sides) and repair it with heating guct tape.
If you have to drill out any rivets, it´s not really a big deal. Drill one out, just to see what size nuts and bolts your gonna need to replace it with.
I´ve got an Alldata subscription for my 88 XJ, the wiring diagrams are good. I really don´t know if you have the same window regulator in your 92, believe they were changed in 91?[addsig]

I Have similiar problem relate to window... expect it does open and close all way.. but when i kept pressing the open button. and it does all way down and it grinds like a gear skipping... pretty loud. the dealership told me it's the regulator that need to be replaced.

the result i never bother to replace. at least it works. when it dosent longer work, then im gonna to replace.

A local dealer near me told me that there are three parts to the window assembly 1. The motor, 2. the regulator, and 3. the chain( which rides inside the regulator) They told me it's most likely the chain is screwed up near the end and that's why it won't go down all the way and I can hear the gear skipping noise. it can't be the gear because that thing does about 20 full 360 degree turns for a full movement up or down. I'm gonna try and replace that chain first and see what happens. ( the good ting is the cahin is only $40 compared to $240 for the regulator.
