YJ air restrictor removal mod

Re: RE: Pull pull pull SNAP!

haha, I'd tell you if I knew!!! You have got me very curious as to where it is though

SOMEONE. PLEASE TELL TWISTEDCOPPER, JCOOK, AND ME WHERE THE 2ND RESTRICTOR IS LOCATED ON THE VEHICLE

Where is the third restrictor ? Please ?

It's just to the left of the fourth restrictor but also not too far away from the second restrictor. When you see the second restrictor, keep going but if you run into the fourth restrictor, you've gone too far. Back up and you should spot the third restrictor.

:D

I've come to realize that is restricted information.

Come on guys! It's well known that less restriction equals better mpg. Do you know how much money you are costing all of us by not letting us in on the secret? Gas prices are crazy right now!

I know I am reviving an old thread, but anyway...

In my case (94 YJ) there was one restrictor where the air comes into the airbox, and another on the exit tubing (INSIDE the tubing, I should say).

Got a pic of the one coming into the box? The tube inside the tube leaving the box to the intake is the one that I know about. I never saw another restrictor coming into the box, just a weird-shaped intake tube...

I dont have a picture, but it's the main opening of the box (where air come in from the engine bay into the box itself). If you look closely, there is a part very similar to the other one clipped here, which you can unclip and remove (mine got damaged while removing it about 3 or 4 months ago, but I really did not care as I was not planning on keeping it!). Basically, this makes the front opening of the box larger (more diameter) and allows more air to enter the box. I imagine it also causes more turbulence, but it is not as if the air cas coming in smoothly anyway (not after the fan next to it, the 90 degree turn into the filter, passing through the filter, and all the other turns to reach the pistons!) so I was willing to take the extra amount of air any day of the week! (it's not as if there was a laminar flow anyway!)

Every time this thread is revived i run out and pull the filter box off and look again. I have yet to find the stupid second filter:confused:

I removed the restrictor and cut the entire driver side out of the lower half of my air box.. and cut some water drain holes in the bottom. I don't think there's a way to get more air in there with the stock setup than that.

Red, I'll take a picture of mine tonight...

Snitty, I like your way of thinking!

Sure there is: Just remove all the airbox and intake tube, and duct tape the filter to the TB!

A couple of months ago, I was trying to move my son's '95 Chevy 4x4 that he dumped at our house but it wouldn't start. When I opened the hood to jumpstart it, I saw that he didn't have an air cleaner or filter, just an open carb. I asked him what happened to it, and he said that "all my friends run that way for more power". I tried to explain the purpose for an air filter and the detrimental effects of not running one on an engine, but my words fell on deaf ears. I love him to death, but my son isn't real bright sometimes......:(

OK, I got pictures... But I ran out of batteries, so I am posting the ONLY 2 pictures I could take tonight. Maybe I can post better ones tomorrow or during the weekend, but these should give you an idea of what to look for.

If you look at the opening on the airbox where the arrows are pointing, you will find that in the opening, there is a cone-like device which clips into the plastic of the box itself. Just remove this cone-like device and you open the entrance to the airbox by having a larger diameter.

I think everyone knows about the restrictor on the hose going to the TB, so I am not going to take a picture of that one. Now, for the 3rd restrictor... Well, as someone before me said, it is next to the 4th restrictor, and it's location is restricted information!!!! :D :p

I think you just confirmed my theory that there were two different airboxes made for the 2.5 YJ. The front of mine doesn't look like that. Rather than that hole with the restrictor, it has a tube that sticks out about 3 inches or so that turns down at the front right behind the left headlight.
