I've got a 78 CJ5, in pretty good shape. It has a 360 and all the fixins. Has a 4" body lift, and running 33x12.5 thornburgs. But headers are just now starting to burn through. Don't want to buy cheap new set that I'll be replacing in a couple years. Can't really, and don't want to go back to...

Checked rear wheel bearings. GONE. So changed to one piece axles,changed from 10'' brakes to 11'' brakes,wheel seals,and brake lines. Done. Oh no water pump bearing goin out. Took it off. Won't be at parts store till Tuesday or Wednesday. Can't wait to drive it again.

Yep, wheel bearing GONE!! Gonna throw in one piece axles and put'er back together. Should have checked it out when I bought it, but I've only put bout 200 miles on it. So.... Wish me luck ;-)

I was thinking about the one piece axles as well. I have the ones from my 76 CJ5. I need to find out if they'll match up. So otherwise it should be a kinda easy fix then,huh.

I've got a 78 CJ5 with 360. A slight grinding noise started about 10 miles ago. Pulled it in shop, jacked up and found I can easily pull entire wheel, axle and all out. Stopped there. Still has the tapered axles. Any ideas guys?

Just pulled my transmission out of my 78 CJ5. It went smooth with no problems. Power washed it, taking it to shop in the morning to be rebuilt. Has 6 busted teeth on my second gear, some marking on third. Can't wait till it's done. Miss it already.

Well now that you've replaced everything outside the motor, ya may as well rebuild the motor. I did the same thing on my 76 CJ5. I kept throwing money at it and it was just wore out. Rebuilt it and since I had already replaced all the outside stuff I was even more happy with it once it was done...

Well, I've had a 76 Cj5 since 91, but in the middle of some suspension work I discovered the frame was rotton. So I parked it,I couldn't bear to sell it, so now I have a whole parts jeep. So I'm really glad I didn't sell it.

Bought a 78 CJ5 with a fresh rebuilt 360. Can't believe how good of shape it's in. I'm back to Jeepin again. Gonna be a great summer.
