4.0 Throttle Body on a 2.5 myth???

Roundlights

New member
Hey gang,
I just caught wind in a discussion on how to get more from a 2.5 (97 TJ)

Is swaping the throttle body from a 4.0 a myth or can it actually be done with ease??

This conversation also included the mention of 10 extra horse.....

Any opinions..... better yet facts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
No high end, being passed by school buses' on the highway guy.

RE: broken tap

Yes it can be done with relative ease. Will it make a large difference? Not unless you port match the intake manifold and are sucking air through a high flow filter. 10 extra horses?? No way

Sounds like it may not be worth it then. I am running a cold air intake, but I don't think I will persue it if its not a noticeable difference.

Any other thoughts on getting a bit more out of the 2.5 laneiac? Chip worth it?

Thanks again,
And by the way, how are things south of PDX?

It's done often, I've got a 4.0L TB on my '95 2.5L. They have quite a larger bore.

You'll have to see if the intake manifold opening is smaller than the TB bore and bore it out if it is. It's easy to do, just put rags in the intake and vacuum out all shavings.

Do it, it's worth it, you'll notice a difference. To me, even if it's not 10hp, it will compliment the overall power package upgrade to the 2.5L engine that needs all the help it can get.

Have you seen the 4Bangers United Forum or the 4Bangers United homepage? The homepage should have lots of 2.5L tech tips.

BTW make sure you get a '96+ throttle body if you do this upgrade, otherwise you won't be able to mount the MAP sensor to the base of the TB.

Here's the difference between the 2.5L and 4.0L TB's.

RE: I pulled the trigger on antsinmypants

Round- dont bother with a chip, I have heard they arent worth the money. Do a nice tube intake with a K&N, A header and a good exhaust. You may also want to get rid of the clutch fan.

Things are crappy south of PDX. I am most likely going to be living up there in September. Dont know if you do much wheeling, but let me know if you wanna get together and do some jeepin..

Heya Lane, we'd love another Jeeper in the big city!! (as long as you freekin' wave when you pass! damn yuppies up here!)

Got the air intake already, I have heard mixed thoughts on the headers, been told it actually draws power rather than add.

Clutch fan huh? That is a new one to me (not the fan itself just the removing it part!)

How about the A/C?
I have ZERO use for it. Can I just disconnect it and pick up the serpentine belt for the non-a/c 2.5??

As far as wheeling goes........ yes absolutely. The only drawback is I am sitting pretty stock on 31's currently. I have gone out and played a few times, and hell, even a stocker does terrific! But unfortunatly browns camp is not in my near future, this is my daily driver with about an 80 mile round trip commute every day..... so 7"'s & 35's would just kick the crap out of that lil' ol 4 banger!
I am looking for people to run with though.

I am divorcing, employed with a JEEP and a dog..... life is good!!
This summer is all about sleeping under the stars and checking out this entire state. Crater lake in june, hells canyon july, and the redwoods in august....... and this 2.5L is gonna get me there, all be it very slowly!

This TJ is getting set up to put me in the back country to camp and back pack, and do some fairly tame trail runs, but rock crawler she won't be until I pick up another ride for a daily beater.

RE: more messing around (limited time)

round, check out jolly jeepers this july. weekend campout, not just jeeps, and i'm sure you can find some jeeps your size to run with (maybe not me though..lol) check it out cya there.......

I have looked into making that trip out to the TILL, but I will be getting back from crater lake on the 14th and I (and the jeep & dog) are going to be beat from that trip! I would like to go though!

By the way, if you happen to know any of the jolly jeepers or if you are one......... the little flyers you have stationed around the city on this event(i saw one at gresham jeep) they have nothing on there telling people where the event actually is!! It only says that everybody will be meeting at milepost 6 or something like that...... gives no town as reference!

Thanks for the heads up though!!

it is being held on private property off of hwy 6 going to browns camp. You must register by sending in your info and $$ ....

Ah hah! Explains the no location thing!!

I did the swap today, very simple to do and very well worth it. Found the part at a salvage yard for $50, gasket for $3, best mod I've done for under $60.
