i just installed a rebuilt alternator and it works great except that my headlights cut off my voltage. I was told that i put it in upside down. But i put it in exactly as it had been. I'm wondering if when it was rebuilt if it was rebuilt and put back together upside down?? does this sound right??? thanks, ben[addsig]

Where did you get the alternator? I don't think you could put it in upside down, but you could be able to hook up the wires wrong. I would guess that it is a bad unit[addsig]

I'll apologize here too (plus it brings my number of posts up :p )

It could have been built wrong. It sounds like it's not working at all. Check your other post for some suggestions and questions[addsig]

roughly 25% of rebuilt or remanufactured alternators are defective. not to say yours is , but it could be . take it to where you bought it and have them test it. odax

You said it was putting out 14 volts, so on a guess I´d say check your engine ground real good, might be trying to ground through your headlights and when you turn them on it messes with the ground. Checking the ground to the headlights and the ground for the grill, hood latch body part might also be helpful. Every time I remove a ground strap (or wire) I put one of those star type washers under there and make sure the metal is clean. Don´t know if your alternater has a seperate ground or grounds through the mount. An extra wire (thick) between the alternater (case)and the motor block sure can´t hurt anything and might help. Alot of vehicles, ground the alternator case, to one of the thermostat housing bolts (usually a stud).[addsig]

did you run your serpentine belt correctly? maybe you're having the alternator SPIN the wrong way...[addsig]
