New YJ owner with paint question

Fish!

Well, I just picked up my first Jeep. 1989 YJ with about 160k on the odometer. She's rough and sun bleached but she's all mine. She's been sitting for about 2 years, so it took the morning to get her running with the help of my Dad, but we did it and the 4.2L runs like a champ now. To say that I got it cheap would be an understatement. Needless to say I've got some plans.

Paint question: I can't find a paint chart for 1989. Does anybody know what color this thing was? It's sort of a grey/brown/green it's really hard to describe.

i know this isnt the answer to your question but I would sand the whole thing down and use bedliner paint on it, ive seen companies that make hi gloss and many many different colors im sure youd like. Think about it no rust, no scratches, no dings and if something chips all you have to do is roll on a fresh coat.

That fresh, factory look of that faded, funky color you have now is Khaki Metallic, Color Code HJ5/BL. This is according to the paint chart I found at:

I've purchased touch-up paints from them before and was real satisfied with the paint match and quality. However, this may be way too expensive to paint an entire vehicle. I don't even know how much paint it would take and since it is a metallic you've also got to shoot a clear coat as well.

Anyway, I hope this helps you identify your paint color at least.

BL is the factory American Motors code. Any paint shop or paint carrier will be able to match that code. I just did mine. You can also find the original decal kit online. PM me for info.
