Question about factory alarm

My GC has the factory alarm system.. i want to install a remote start/lock system... i hate the infrared fob, it only wirks for like 5 feet.... instead of radio control. I notice that when i lock the doors using the switch on the door (power locks) and shut the door the alarm arms... can i hook up an aftermarket system and not screw up the factory alarm? i know i'd have to unlock the doors to disarm the alarm prior to starting if this would work...

i've seen it go both ways. I would make sure that you get a system that works with your factory alarm. But i've seen people with two remotes for one vehicle.

that's my two cents

if you buy a good after market alarm, i wouldn't even worry about keeping the factory alarm operating because the new one would be so much better. look into some from viper... or really any of the DEI brands. they're all great. i have a brand called avital on mine (which is a DEI brand) and am pleased with it. the remotes are also programmable... you can control your windows and all too... its pretty cool. plus remote start if you want it:)

plus remote start if you want it:)

Of Course, that's not a good idea if you have a manual transmission  . Then again, I've never liked the idea of having a vehicle start up in a parking lot with the driver outside of it .

I have a marksman alarm in my GC. It was installed without messing with the factory system. This way if the old lady wants to use the Jeep she doesnt need my keys and can use the spare with only for factory fob. The marksman alarm I have also has remote start.

i can't stand the aftermarket alarms.. they are soo annoying.. the factory one can only be set off by opening the hood/doors that works great for me.. there is nothing more annoying than an alarm that goes off every time a car passes by.... I dont care much for alarms, i just want the remote start, this way i can come out of work/my house to a warm car, its better to let the engine warm up before driving - my wife's car has one and its great, plue i can unlock the doors from 800 feet away if i want to, not 5 with the factory system.

most aftermarket alarm systems actually have adjustable sensitivity... that is, you can turn them down low enough to where they will ONLY go off if a door is open or something really big hits them hard. so... for guys like me who have an XJ with power-nothing and no security, an aftermarket alarm is the best option:)

Whats up,i seen a few web sites you should check out.I know you would have to find a system that will interface with the stock one but most of them dont.Leave it up to the dealers to make sure you have to buy parts from them, lol. Its bs.anyways check this site out i dont know if it will help at all but it might. http://www.keylessride.com/company/testimonials.asp

Just revisiting this topic - I'm looking to order a remote start and wanted to see if anyone has any insight before I go and order one.

But i've seen people with two remotes for one vehicle.

Man, that's as bad as my TV!! I've got, like, 4 remotes laying on my coffee table. I say, cut 'er down, get a soft top with zippers, and then you don't have to worry about ANY of that stuff!

My only advice is to not cheap out. I have gone the way of the cheap alarms/remote starts before and it was just silly. Damn thing had a mind of its own. I spent a few bucks on that marksmen alarm and Ihavent had any trouble with it in 2 years

I bought an aftermarket alarm off ebay with the remote start. They can be a big pain to wire. It will take a few hours to wire up. There is a website called 12voltinstall.com that has wiring diagrams and color codes including the wire to inferface with the factory alarm so you dont have to disconnect it. On most alarm you can either lower the sensitifity or complete remove the shock sensor if you dont want it and still have it sound when the door is opened. depending on the type of alarm you may need some extra relays for remote start, starter kill, and power door locks. The biggest problem I had was the power door locks. It was my own fault really I wired my wifes gc first and then mine and just assumed they were the same. If you got any tech questions PM me.

I got a wire chart off an alarm manufacturer site, so it shouldn't be too bad. I got the remote start yesterdfay - I'm glad they make them without the alarm.. I really hate alarms. Are you sure you have that web site right? It doesn't come up for me.

Just make sure it has good quality relays. Bad relays were the #1 reason I had people back in the gagrage when I used to deal with them many moons ago.

I don't think you will have any real difficulty installing it.

I loved having remote start. Nothing like walking out to a toasty ride on a below zero day and not having to scrape a single window. Man you have me wanting one again.

Graewulf, I have a remote start for my Cherokee, Its an Autostart brand. I can start my Jeep from at least 150 yards. Once I was deer hunting and I could see someone with a flashlight looking in my Jeep. I was up a tree in the fence row, so I pulled my keys out and hit the start button. I must have been just out of range, so I tried putting the remote under my chin and start it. That gave me the extra range. The Jeep fired up and sent the guy running for his car. I was about 200 yards away. After that I went back to the shop that installed it and had them move the LED that was under the dash, into plain view. Now when I lock the Jeep with the Autostart remote the LED blinks to make it look like I have an alarm. Don't cheap out, get a good one, you can always transfer it to your next ride. I also noticed alarm companies make good alarms but ok auto starters and don't have the longrange reach. Good Luck

Funny how that works, isn't it?

just thought i would add my .02 here but the alarm is only as good as the install  when installing your own alarm system try to avoid the usual spots that a theif would look for the brain and wiring.

as for brands with remote start that one should look into are of course CLIFFORD, DEI, (which makes viper), and crimestopper. the only reason these are any better than the el cheapos, is because of the technology that has gone into these little guys over the years.

Avital was a pretty reliable alarm many moons ago. I'll second recommending Clifford. DEI must have gotten better over the years :|

Crimestopper it is.. remote start only. I can't repeat it enough - I HATE alarms!!! they are annoying and serve no useful purpose anyway. A good thief will disabe ti in 30 seconds as everyone walks right by.

BTW: it is installed and works great. now I just have to find the #*$&&$ alarm disable wire for the factory alarm. If I lock the doors then shut them it arms itself and the purple/yellow wire isn't it . (I hooked the disarm wire there and it doesn't turn it off). It works great if I don't arm the factory alarm though.
