Question about lift needed

I just bought my Jeep it's an 89 YJ and when I got it they had some 18" rims and low profile tires on it. I believe that the suspension is stock from what I see. I got a new set of Nitto Terra Grappler LT325/65R18R's from a friend. Will they work on my Jeep or do I need a lift and what kind and how much do I need.

That size is equivalent to most 35" tires, you'll need at least 4" of suspension lift and a small body lift, or 4" lift and TJ flares.

You don't think they would be too much strain on the engine? I don't mind adding a lift but think I'm going to get rid of the 18" rims and tires and go with some 15" and some 31's. I will still go with a small lift but I'm learning from here that I really don't need anything bigger.

They will be a large strain on the engine unless you regear the axles. Depending on engine and transmission type, you won't notice much power loss with 31" tires.

I have the same year jeep, have been running 31" tires for 2 years. 1 year without a lift and 1 year with. Still had good power and got 15mpg with a 6cyl and 5spd. The lift will allow you to take it offroad and flex the suspension without hitting the fender flares! I have a fabtec 3.5" lift and it was great with 31" tires. But now I have 33" and need to trim some body or do body lift.

Figure out what you want your end result to be or you will wind up doing it twice or improvising. I should have done a 4.5" lift with a SYE. Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda!
