    Do I have 4-HI and 4-LO?

All the way forward is 4hi, 2hi, N, and then all the way to the rear is 4 low. You have a T150. If you need more info, Jeep Tech Pages has almost everything.

Nice buy. I have manual brakes in my CJ7. I didn't even know they were manual until I actually looked.

Rear Axle choices--Anyone swapped an 8.8 into their Jeep?

Sounds like a lot of work. I have to second Johnny's comment. If I were in your shoes, I would pawn off the 8.8 and 205 to pay for a dana 44 front with a passenger diff.

    Grandpa?

That was great! Come to think about it, my dad was around 40 when he became "Grampa". It'll be great, I'm sure.

Rear Axle choices--Anyone swapped an 8.8 into their Jeep?

How are you going to use a Ford 44 front? They are driver side drop. I would probably go to the 9 inch. You'll have to buy driveshafts anyways, so I don't think the few inches of pinion height will matter.

Rear Axle choices--Anyone swapped an 8.8 into their Jeep?

Have you thought about keeping your M20? People talk that axle down way too much. If you get one pieces and fix up the tubing, they are pretty stout. If you want wider, they you'll have to replace your front axle, too. As you probably know, you'll have to weld on new spring perches. I would...

For you new to Jeepin' a little help for you.

You could install a hillbilly cruise control throttle on your shifter. Or you could somehow move your gas pedal forward so you can heel toe easier. :hide:

    newly acuired project

Like everyone else said, I would go with a nicer GM v6. I would try a supercharged 3.8. That might spice things up.

couple 'dumb' questions from a newbie

If you think about it, when going through the trouble of swapping in a V8 and an 8.8, what's a little more effort in swapping in a front Dana 44. Since you have a YJ, you can find an old Ford 4x4 and take out those axles. I think they should be a 9 inch and a 44. Where are you located?

    Maintenance Tips Wanted

Use a torch to get the diff plug out. Use anti-seize on anything on the engine that is removed frequently. Oh yeah, when you are trying to install a body lift or body bushings, don't prop up the body with your back. It kind of hurts.

For you new to Jeepin' a little help for you.

I'm sure if you drive smartly and take care of your transmission, it will live longer. As far as manual/auto goes, it's personal preference. What kind of Jeep do you have? I have a T5 five speed in my 7 which is supposed to be really weak. I'll wheel it until it dies, then throw in an SM...
