fuel gauge is retarded?!?!

I have an 89 jeep wrangler islander edition. It's v6 and has been switched to carb. My fuel gauge read 3/4 is full and full is empty. We replaced it with a equus gauge. Now it reads full is empty and past full is full. We checked the sending unit and the wiring. And even checked the sending unit by wiring it straight to it. I checked the ohms. Empty was 7 half was 44 and full was 96. I don't know what is wrong with it. The guy we got it from replaced the gas tank and sending unit. The gas tank is for a 4 banger...but I don't reckon that matters. Any ideas?

Wow, Lots of questions need to be answered. Where did the engine come from? They didn't put a V6 in an 89 wrangler. Where is the fuel pump? What was there before the V6? There is a diference between a 4 cylinder sending unit and a 6 cylinder unit. If it was changed over to carb, Why? Sounds like you either have the wrong sending unit or the wrong gauge.

It's a straight six. My bad. My husband didn't tell me they was q differnce in motors on v6 but no its the same motor that's been in it and I'm not sure where the guy got the gas tank and sending unit from. I just know the gas tank was for a 4 cylinder but It was switched to carb when we got it. And we have the correct gauge so I'm not sure why its doing it.

The 89 6 cylinder wrangler came with a carburator, so if it was changed, maybe it was changed to a better one. Thats good. The only thing that i can think of is it sounds like you have to drop the tank and bend the float rod up so the gauge reads right. If it has been replaced recently, then it should come apart easy. You could also cut a hole in your floor just above the sending unit to get to it and cover it with the carpet when done. If you go this route, Do a lot of measuring and cut three sides of a square then bend the fourth side like a hinge so it will bend back. Make sure the square is big enough to get the sending unit out.

The jeep has a computer but was re wired when switched to carb. Idk much on jeeps. It just don't make sense to me.

About the only thing that the computer did on an 89 was monitor the functions of the engine and adjust the carburator . If the carburator was changed to something diferent then the computer does nothing anymore.

The '89 6cyl that you have was originally a carb'd motor, as it still is, and the computer had limited functions.

I'd look for an original 20gal tank and sending unit that came in your 6cyl Jeep, not the 15 gal stuff that came in the 4cyl.
