This weeks discussion

In global terms, I think if you a serving a prison term you should atleast be provided a safe environment. Personally, the guy had it coming and if he wasnt such a scum bag he wouldnt have been in the situation in the first place.

I think they should provide a safe environment for these kids that have to go to these Catholic schools and churches. That guy did eveyone a favor one less to worry about.

i saw this on pirate earlier, im glad he killed him. sickos dont reform, they stay sick. if he had gotten out at some point he still would have been messing up young kids lives. hes better off dead.

being in boston, i've been hearing a lot about that story. i believe the reason that druce was so calm after the conviction was that he didn't really care either way in the first place. he was already in prison for murder, granted he had a good chance of getting out, but he was in there for a long time none the less. he is now the top dog in prison. kill a child molesting priest has made his "juice" go way up. and he knew that before he killed geoghan.

As good as it is for him to be gotten rid of, I don't think that it's good for this type of thing to be going on. He wasn't given a death sentence, bet essentially that's what happened. I'm not sad to see him go, but it's too bad that this type of thing happens just arbitrarily.

Killing someone that deserves to be killed doesn't always make it right. Sure the guy probably deserved it, but we can't change things now.

I see no problem with it when someone kills someone who deserves it. In fact, in many situations, I could see myself doing it. That is if given the proper circumstances

I could see myself doing the same thing as well. That is only if it were my child. The wife and I don't have kids yet, but I still know what I'd do. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do it any other time than that. That doesn't mean I would go looking for someone who committed such a crime. I believe/know that he deserved what came to him in all respects. There are many out there who's kids had this done to them that are feeling a good level of justice. This man who was already committed did this for them in an odd sort of way. I say thank you for his act. Sad to say justice needs to be taken into our own hands more often....Mikey

I think knowing what can happen to you behind bars is all the better deterrant.

Convicts are funny that way. One of them might have beat an 80 Yr old woman to death to rob her house, but inside, he can pass judgement on a child molester.

This world is messed up.........:(

prison is not a deterrant. prison is a good thing to do with people that commit crimes, but it is not a detterant. how many people do you think commit a crime thinking they're going to get caught?

that said, what goes on in prison is just what happens. sure you didnt think you were going to get caught, but you did, and now you're paying the price, you're in prison, and you're going to have to deal.

So the question is how much protection can we assure someone in prison and do we lose sleep over it when they get killed? By the moral standards that most of us believe in everyone is entitled to a fair chance; does that not include those deviants who would harm us otherwise? I'm personally glad he's gone, but I don't agree with those feelings at the same time. I know we're not put on this earth to judge others. I am comforted by the knowledge that everyone gets what's coming to them in the end. I have no control over it now or then and I'll just sit back and so enjoy the ride until then.

Edit - I read that wrong, I thought the killer was a victim of the preist.

Should that guy taken it upon himself to kill the guy? No.

Sounds to me like both of those guys are where they belong though

well it is common in prison for sex offenders and snitches to be in solitary, or all be put together where they won't be bothered by the rest of the inmates. sex offenders are actually the easiest cons to manage while they're inside, when they get out is a completely different story.

the priest was awaiting further trial, he should have been in an area where nobody could have gotten to him like that, but am i going to lose sleep over what happened to him? not a chance.

while i won't necessarily feel bad for something that happens to someone who is in prison, i do think it makes a lot of sense to separate sex offenders and snitches. prison is a rough place as it is, no need for more chances of incidents by mixing the inmates. there's no reason to insinuate something like that so the correction officers just doing their jobs have to deal with more sh!t than they already do in there.

bchcky,

I think in some cases punishment is a deterant.

For instance where a crime has been considered a misdemeanor and has been changed to a felony offense, statistics have shown a decrease in those areas.
The crooks were thinking it wasn't worth the risk.

In Texas here back in the 80's we had a brilliant move to lower car burglaries from a felony to I think a class A misdemeanor, all of the sudden car burglaries went on the rise. The word got out on the street that the punishment was lighter if you got caught.

Many petty criminals know what they are looking at punishment wise for the crimes they are committing.

I know that prison sucks and you can get killed, raped, or catch TB.
Who would want that? I wouldn't.
Does that then make it a deterrant for me. Sure does.

I'd have to agree, for me anyway, prison is a deterrent. There are several people on my "to do" list, should I ever be granted a license to kill, but in the meantime, since killing them would send me to prison, I won't do it. That's the only reason there are some people still walking around alive in this world, because I don't want to go to prison. I could kill a scumbag with absolutely no compunction whatsoever. Once you've killed one person, it's easier the second time.

i just feel its the fear of getting caught, not prison itself. everyone can be all high and mighty, but presented with a flawless plan to knock off $50 million, you'd be hard pressed to turn it down. now, one of your buddies says "i've got the security codes to this bank, lets try them out" you'd look at him as if he were mad. ask any person in prison, and i'd say 99% never expected to get caught. everyone is a master con in their own mind.

I think the government should make every effort to keep prisioners safe - within reason. I would agree that that priest would have been a good candidate for the gas chamber, but that's not for an inmate to decide.

I've actually thought a bit about this. It goes back to the core question of "what is prision?" Is it simply punishment, or is it designed to provide some sort of correction, to help you become a better person. I would argue that the vast majority of people that go into prision come out a harder person. I'm not saying make prision easier, but at least focus on addressing the reasons they are there.

I think they should ban socks, or at least develop a licensing and sock registration program.
